THE TURTLE MOUNTAIN BAND OF CHIPPEWA TRIBAL COUNCIL HAVE DECLARED A FIRE EMERGENCY BURN BAN ON THE TURTLE MOUNTAIN RESERVATION LANDS on Friday, April 12th, 2019.

The Burn Ban prohibits open burning in or near any grasslands, brush, undergrowth, woods, prairie, or slough whenever the North Dakota Fire Danger Rating for Rolette County is High, Very High, or Extreme, or any time that the National Weather Service has declared a Red Flag Warning for critical burning conditions in Rolette County. The current ND fire danger rating can be obtained by calling the Belcourt PD at 477-6134, the Belcourt Fire Department at 477-3185, and the BIA Forestry at 477-6531.

This Burn Ban includes but is not limited to brush piles, leaves, burn barrels, garbage pits, campfires (not in a designated campground or cleared area), field and stubble burning, ditch burning, fireworks and bon fires on all Turtle Mountain Reservation Lands.  This Burn Ban shall be in effect from April 12 through May 31, 2019.

Burning will be permitted – with a Burn Permit from B.I.A. Forestry & Fire – ONLY on days when the North Dakota Fire Danger Rating for Rolette County is LOW to MODERATE – with the understanding that whoever obtains a Burn Permit is still responsible for maintaining control over their fire.

THE PENALTY FOR VIOLATION OF THIS BURN BAN IS A CLASS II, III or IV OFFENSE TRIBAL CODE 26.19: MAX SENTENCE OF 30 DAYS IN JAIL AND A $1,000 – 5,000 FINE.
