SUMMARY:

Supervised by the Education/Disabilities Manager. A teacher aide is responsible for assisting the classroom teacher in providing a supportive environment conducive to learning and positive child development to children ages 3, 4 and 5. The teacher aide is responsive to the needs of the classroom teacher, student, and administration.

A teacher assistant in the Turtle Mountain Head Start Program is responsible for the duties outlined below: To abide by the program’s standards of conduct, in accordance with Performance Standard 1304.52 (h) (I), which states:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Keep work area clean and arranged orderly to include classrooms, bathrooms, and toys.
  • Provide proper supervision of children and to interact and communicate with the children in a positive manner during the school day.
  • Responsibility of classroom management in absence of classroom teacher.
  • Perform routine childcare activities in relation to health and safety needs. These activities will include, but not be limited, to helping the children dress themselves, remove winter wear, washing hands after using the bathroom or change diaper, before and after meals, changing diapers and soiled clothes, etc.
  • Ride the school bus with students and ensure all children are in seat belts.
  • Participate with teacher in meeting with parents at two scheduled parent/teacher conferences, two home visits, monthly parent meetings, and as needed throughout the school year to relate the child’s progress to parents, elicit information relevant to child’s welfare and developmental program, and to provide information to parents on parenting skill, child development, financial and educational planning etc.
  • Prepare bulletin boards, displays, classroom decorations under supervision of classroom teacher.
  • Prepare and submit all required reports in a timely manner.
  • Keep info1mation and records of the children and their families confidential.
  • Teacher aides are responsible for assisting the classroom teacher with the following:
  • Assist classroom teacher in maintaining a positive learning environment and making changes in its arrangement to meet educational developmental objectives.
  • Assist with promotion of language development and self-confidence through discussion vocabulary building, storytelling, drama, and music assist with planned activities using a variety of teaching/learning methods and materials to understand the “Creative Curriculum”.
  • Assist with teaching all children, including those with special needs, in both individual and group sessions according to their individual needs.
  • Assist with the implementation of the school readiness plans.
  • Assist with screening and recording observations and evaluation of children’s development, motor, growth, health, and social/emotional skills.
  • Assist in maintaining individual files for each child in the classroom develop good coordination, social skills, creativity, self-expression and an interest in learning. • Assist with planned activities that promote introduction and understanding of Math and Science concepts and promote problem solving, experimentation, and thought processes.
  • Other related job duties as assign by Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have High School Diploma or GED.
  • Classroom experience with children preferred.
  • Must pass physical examination with fit for duty. (prior to start work)
