SUMMARY:
The Early Head Start Floater/Janitor plays a dual role in supporting the operations of the Early Head Start program by ensuring the cleanliness of the facility and stepping in as needed to assist in the classroom or other areas. This role is essential in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for children, families, and staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Floater Duties:
- Provide assistance in classrooms as needed, supporting teachers and other staff.
- Supervise children during activities, meals, nap times, and outdoor play.
- Assist with feeding, diapering, and other caregiving tasks as required.
- Support the implementation of early childhood activities and lessons.
- Step in to cover teacher or staff breaks or absences in the classroom or other program areas.
- Help with child transitions between activities and ensure their safety.
- Assist with general program operations, including helping with paperwork or organizing materials.
- Participate daily as teacher in EHS classrooms when not performing janitorial duties.
Janitorial Duties:
- Clean and sanitize classrooms, restrooms, common areas, and other facility spaces daily to ensure a hygienic environment.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and clean windows and surfaces.
- Empty trash and recycling bins regularly.
- Ensure that cleaning supplies are stocked and report any shortages to the supervisor.
- Maintain cleanliness in outdoor play areas and ensure safety by removing hazards.
- Clean and sanitize toys, learning materials, and equipment in classrooms.
- Assist with maintaining a safe and clean kitchen and dining area.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach frequently.
- Ability to perform light to moderate physical tasks, including lifting, sweeping, mopping, and handling cleaning supplies.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
- Work Environment:
- Early Head Start facility with classroom, common, and play areas. Interaction with young children, staff, and families.
- All other duties assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate’s or Bachelorts degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or CDA]Child Development Associate is preferred.
- High School diploma or GED and the ability to obtain CDA/Child Development Associate credential within one year, (Must sign written agreement).
- Strong understanding of child development, including the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of infants and toddlers.
- Ability to create and implement engaging, hands-on activities that promote learning.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact professionally with parents, staff, and community partners.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Ability to work as part of a team and be adaptable to changing needs in the classroom and community.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain).
- Background check clearance (as required by federal and state regulations).
- Ability to lift and carry children, as well as bend and engage in physical activities with children o Ability to lift 50 pounds, bend, kneel, and sit on floor as needed o Frequent standing, walking, and engaging in physical activities with children.
